U.S. Mint Issues Silver Coin

To commemorate the 400th anniversary of the Jamestown colony, the first permanent British settlement in North America, the US Mint is issuing special silver and gold coins.The $1 silver coin is being sold for $35 in proof and $33 for uncirculated. The mintage of the 90 percent silver/10 percent copper 26.730 gram coin is 500,000.

The obverse of the silver coin, by Donna Weaver and Everhart, shows three faces representing the diverse cultures that lived at Jamestown — an Englishman, a Native American and an African. The reverse, by Susan Gamble and Charles Vickers, shows the three ships that carried English settlers to Virginia.

A $5 gold coin is also being issued. Surcharges from the sale of the coins will benefit the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation and the Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities.

Congress authorizes up to two commemorative coin issues a year. The other 2007 release will mark
the 50th anniversary of the integration of public schools in Little Rock, Arkansas.
